Yes. Southwest offers military fares for eligible travelers. Checked September 15, 2026.

Southwest Military Discount

Where to buy: call 1-800-435-9792 or visit a Southwest ticket counter. Military fares cannot be purchased on Southwest.com.

Who qualifies: the official military-fare page lists active-duty U.S. military personnel, reservists, National Guard and Coast Guard members with active orders, specified service-academy cadets or midshipmen, and authorized dependents. Each category has conditions; this is not blanket eligibility for all veterans, retirees or families.

The reviewed official pages publish no unified discount percentage. Unpublished does not mean no discount is available, and it does not establish that a military fare will be cheaper than a regular promotional fare. Official military-fare eligibility and booking instructions, checked 2026-09-15.

The left column records the official findings. Claims in the right column do not fill any unconfirmed official field.

How to buy Southwest military fares

  1. Read the military-fare eligibility and identification requirements on the official military-travel page.
  2. Call 1-800-435-9792 or visit a Southwest ticket counter to request a military fare. The official page does not offer this fare for purchase on Southwest.com.
  3. At the airport ticket counter, present the required valid military identification to receive the boarding pass for the military fare. Check the dependent-document rules if traveling as a dependent.

The official distribution policy says fare price and availability are not guaranteed until ticket issuance and directs readers to the applicable fare rules for complete military-fare information. It does not supply a universal percentage or a ready-to-use itinerary price. Fare Information, General Fare Rules, and Military and Government Fares, checked 2026-09-15.

Rapid Rewards points cannot be redeemed to purchase military or government fares. This is a points-redemption restriction, not a complete military-benefit stacking policy.

Government fares follow a separate route

The official page gives separate federal and state government-fare instructions. Federal bookings use the listed authorized travel-management, travel-office or Government Reservation Desk routes; state-government instructions are listed separately. Use that section to determine the appropriate government booking path. Military-fare eligibility is not substituted for government-fare qualification.

The official distribution policy also lists military and government fares available through its distribution system. That distribution route does not make military fares purchasable on the public Southwest.com booking site.

Baggage and boarding have their own conditions

Baggage benefits

The current help article exempts active-duty U.S. military customers from baggage fees, including excess, oversize and overweight charges, provided no piece exceeds 100 pounds or 80 inches in combined length, width and height. A ticketed customer, including a military customer, may check no more than 20 pieces per flight. Valid active-duty identification is required at check-in.

Dependents traveling without the active-duty military member are subject to normal excess, oversized and overweight charges. Authorized-dependent eligibility for a military fare does not by itself extend this baggage exception.

Source: Baggage section, checked 2026-09-15. These are baggage limits, not a fare percentage or a worked unit-conversion example.

Priority Boarding

The current official wording invites active-duty U.S. military members with valid United States Uniformed Services Active Duty Identification to Priority Boarding before Group 1. This is a boarding benefit; its eligibility is not extended to every person eligible for a military fare.

Eligibility and identification

The main page's military-fare eligibility FAQ lists:

  • Active-duty U.S. military personnel.
  • Reservists with active orders.
  • National Guard members with active orders.
  • Coast Guard members with active orders.
  • Cadets or midshipmen attending the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy (West Point), or U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
  • Authorized dependents.

Dependents aged 2 through 11 must be accompanied by a military customer or a military dependent aged 12 or older. Dependents aged 12 or older must present a valid Uniformed Services identification card showing active-duty dependent status.

Source: Military-fare eligibility and dependent FAQ, checked 2026-09-15. The help article separately states the ticket-counter identification requirement for receiving a military-fare boarding pass. A complete online upload or advance identity-verification process was not established in the reviewed pages.

Conditional exceptions in the distribution policy

Section 12, Military and Government Fares separately includes discharged U.S. military personnel traveling within seven days of discharge with a copy of discharge orders, and dependents of spouses who died while in active military service. These are narrowly stated conditions in that policy, not universal veteran, retiree or family eligibility. Checked 2026-09-15.

A general eligibility conclusion covering all veterans or retirees was not confirmed in this review. That is not an official denial.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a Southwest Airlines military discount fare online?

The reviewed official instructions direct customers to telephone booking or a Southwest ticket counter. Military fares are not available for purchase on Southwest.com.

Does a military Southwest discount apply to every veteran?

The reviewed pages do not establish that every veteran or retiree qualifies. Read the named categories and the conditional exceptions in the official distribution policy.

Is a Southwest Air military discount a fixed percentage?

No unified percentage is published in the reviewed official pages. This guide does not substitute an external percentage, estimate a ticket price or promise savings over a promotional fare.

Does Southwest Airlines and military discount eligibility mean the same thing for tickets, bags and boarding?

No. Check the conditions for each benefit separately. Military-fare eligibility, government-fare qualification, baggage exceptions and active-duty Priority Boarding are not interchangeable.

Can veterans assume they qualify for Southwest's military fare?

No. A Southwest veterans discount is not confirmed for all veterans or retirees. The published military-fare categories have conditions, and eligible fares must be requested by phone or at a ticket counter.
