Costco Military Discount: Compare the Membership Fee and Shop Card

The Costco military offer checked on September 12, 2026 is a new-membership promotion: a $40 Digital Costco Shop Card with Executive membership or a $20 card with Gold Star membership. The general new-member promotion lists the same amounts. The military route does not provide a larger card.

This is an enrollment benefit. It does not establish a military-only discount on merchandise.

What you pay, and what you receive

Membership fees checked September 12, 2026 are $130 per year for Executive and $65 per year for Gold Star, plus applicable sales tax.

These monthly figures are arithmetic equivalents, not monthly payment options. The card is separate from the membership charge.

Calculated comparison using September 12, 2026 amounts: the Executive card equals $40 ÷ $130 × 100 ≈ 30.77% of its annual fee. The Gold Star card equals $20 ÷ $65 × 100 ≈ 30.77% of its annual fee.

Expressed in months of membership cost, the calculations are $40 ÷ ($130 ÷ 12) ≈ 3.69 months and $20 ÷ ($65 ÷ 12) ≈ 3.69 months. Use the unrounded annual-fee inputs for those calculations.

That does not mean either membership includes free months. It compares a card’s face value with an annual charge; it does not change the charge or establish how much value you will personally obtain from the card.

The larger card therefore needs context. Executive has twice the annual fee and twice the card amount, so the card-to-fee proportion is identical. These calculations compare the enrollment incentive only. They do not value the other membership benefits.

The military label identifies an enrollment route, not an additional dollar benefit in this comparison. Matching card amounts do not establish that every condition or verification requirement is identical. Compare the terms attached to the route you actually use.

For budgeting, keep the fee and card in separate entries. Record the annual membership charge as money paid and the Digital Shop Card as the conditional enrollment incentive. Subtracting the card’s face value from the fee would describe a comparison you calculated, not a lower membership price offered at checkout.

Check the membership history rule before enrolling

The promotion is valid only for new members and people who have not been a Costco member in any capacity—Primary, Household, or Affiliate—in the last 18 months.

Having no primary membership of your own does not settle that question. The wording also includes household and affiliate membership. Check all the listed capacities before treating yourself as a qualifying new member.

From military verification to receiving the card

1. Open the military enrollment offer. Select “View Military Offer” to reach the military verification form.
2. Complete the verification request. Follow the form’s prompts. A confirmed list of any additional documents that might be requested is not available in this review; do not assume a particular document will be accepted.
3. After verification, follow the enrollment instructions. When entering payment information, use the single-use promotional code provided for the offer. The completed post-verification screens were not tested in this review.
4. Set up automatic renewal during sign-up. Use a Visa credit or debit card, or a Mastercard debit card. Enrollment in automatic renewal at sign-up is required to receive the incentive.
5. Provide a valid email address and complete enrollment. The Digital Costco Shop Card is sent to the Primary Member’s email address supplied at sign-up.
6. Allow for the stated delivery period. The terms checked September 12, 2026 specify delivery within two weeks after successful sign-up and enrollment in automatic renewal. This is the published timing, not a measured delivery result.

What to expect on a shopping receipt

The military-family savings guidance does not set out a military-only merchandise discount. Keep that separate from the enrollment promotion described here.

Practical interpretation: an unchanged product price is not evidence that the membership incentive failed. The stated benefit is a Digital Shop Card following qualifying enrollment, so its delivery is the relevant event to check.

The decision this comparison supports is narrow: understand the fee, the conditional card and the enrollment requirements. A larger card alone does not establish that the more expensive membership is the better choice.
