Military Discount Flights: Compare Airline Fares, Bags & Booking Paths

Military flight prices and military benefits vary by airline; no universal percentage was established in the official pages reviewed. American says some markets have a military or government fare. Southwest requires a phone or counter booking for its military fare, and United offers a dedicated search form. Baggage waivers reduce fees separately and have their own eligibility and limits.

The source audit was first completed September 26, 2026; the Southwest military-fare FAQ was re-read September 27. No ticket was booked and no eligibility was verified.

Quick comparison

Read a military fare, a government fare, a baggage waiver, and a member-site offer as four different products. Their eligible travelers and booking channels do not automatically match.

Airline or routePublished fare informationWho and how to claim
American AirlinesAmerican says government or military fares are offered in some markets. Its public page gives no fixed percentage, fare base, or route-by-route availability.Call Reservations to ask about the exact itinerary. The page does not enumerate ordinary military-fare eligibility.
Southwest AirlinesSouthwest confirms military fares but publishes no universal rate. The fare is not available on Southwest.com and Rapid Rewards points cannot be used to buy it.Eligible groups are U.S. active-duty members (including Reservists, National Guard and Coast Guard with active orders, plus listed service-academy cadets and midshipmen) and authorized dependents. Dependents ages 2–11 have an accompaniment rule; show a valid Uniformed Services ID at check-in.
United AirlinesUnited's readable government or military fare page is a search form. It does not state a public percentage, fare base, eligibility list, or terms in the page body read.Use the dedicated search page to check a specific itinerary. The separate benefits and verification pages did not provide a readable policy body in this review, so those details remain Unknown.
Delta Air LinesDelta's public military page describes active-duty travel benefits and a separate discounted medical-emergency fare for travel to a war-injured immediate family member or domestic partner. It does not publish a general military-fare percentage. For the medical-emergency fare, Delta asks for the traveler’s name, relationship, and the military hospital’s name and phone number; book by message or call 800-221-1212.
American Forces TravelThis is the Department of War's official online leisure-travel site for active military, Guard or Reserve, Coast Guard, retired military, and eligible MWR patrons, with a Flights search. Its public page does not give a flight-specific discount percentage.Check eligibility on the site before comparing a live itinerary. The site's broad leisure-savings language and hotel-specific footnotes do not establish a flight-ticket discount.
Alaska AirlinesUnknown. The official military-fares page returned HTTP 406 during this review, so its current fare terms and rate could not be read. The unreadable page is not evidence that Alaska has no fare or benefit. Check the official page directly when it is readable.

Baggage savings are a separate line

A baggage allowance can lower the cost of a trip without changing the ticket's base fare. The official pages reviewed give different service-member, orders, bag-count, size, and codeshare conditions.

CarrierOfficially described baggage benefitLimits that change the comparison
American AirlinesUp to five checked bags at 100 lb each for active U.S. military and/or dependents traveling on orders; up to three bags at 50 lb each for active-duty personal or leisure travel.American says the free-bag benefit applies to American-marketed and American-operated itineraries, not codeshares operated by partners. Destination conditions may apply.
Southwest AirlinesActive-duty military customers are exempt from baggage fees, including excess, oversize, and overweight charges. Each bag must stay within 100 lb and 80 linear inches; the total is capped at 20 checked pieces per flight. Dependents traveling without the active-duty member pay normal excess, oversize, and overweight charges.
Delta Air LinesFor travel on military orders, Delta lists five free checked bags. For personal travel, it lists two free bags in Delta Main or Comfort and three in Premium Select, First, or Delta One, including the basic experiences named in its table. The page limits the allowance to active-duty U.S. service members. Orders bags may be up to 80 linear inches; personal-travel bags up to 62 linear inches. Delta-marketed tickets, embargoes, and regional restrictions apply.
United AirlinesUnknown from the readable United fare-search page.No baggage allowance is inferred from a government or military fare search page.
Alaska AirlinesUnknown because the official military-fares and Salute to Service pages each returned HTTP 406.The current baggage terms were not readable; no old page or cached copy was used.

Third-party flight offers

Third-party pages can advertise rates or member offers, but those claims stay attributed to the publisher unless an airline-owned page confirms the same terms. The Google sample included MilitaryFares, a GOVX/MilitaryFares landing page, and WeSalute.

PageWhat its body claimsWhat remains unverified
MilitaryFaresIts FAQ advertises flight and travel savings that typically range from 10% to 40% off retail prices. The page does not identify a matched route, dates, fare class, comparison quote, or airline-controlled military rate for that range.
GOVX Flights powered by MilitaryFaresThe page advertises exclusive domestic and international airfare discounts for GOVX members. The page body does not state a percentage, purchase base, fare conditions, or complete eligibility rules.
WeSalute: Breeze Airways offerWeSalute states a 15% reduction from base fare on new Breeze round trips booked on Breeze's site or app with a unique code. It names No Flex fares and Nice, Nicer, or Nicest bundles. This is a third-party offer page, not an airline-owned policy page. Its body gives no offer end date, and an airline-owned confirmation was not found in the sampled official pages.

The MilitaryFares range has no published matched itinerary or fare-class base in the page body read. WeSalute’s Breeze offer names a base-fare basis and booking path, but its terms remain WeSalute’s claim in this review. The source audit records each page and its limits.

Compare the same trip

  1. Match the itinerary. Use the same airports, travel dates, passenger count, cabin, and fare product. A fare that is not available for the exact trip is not a comparable quote.
  2. Record the booking path. Label each quote as airline website, airline phone or counter, official leisure portal, government travel office, or third-party member site. Do not move government-only terms into a personal-trip comparison.
  3. Compare the checkout total. Keep base fare, taxes, baggage, seats, and any service fees in separate fields. A baggage waiver does not change the ticket fare; a base-fare percentage does not necessarily reduce taxes or add-ons.
  4. Check the passenger rule. Record whether the page says active duty, orders, Guard or Reserve, retiree, veteran, dependent, or another MWR-eligible group. An omitted group is Unknown, not excluded.
  5. Save the source and date. Keep the official policy link, the quote time, and the fare conditions together. Prices on travel sites can change before checkout.

For an eligible leisure traveler, American Forces Travel is one official place to search flights. For carrier-specific terms, read the airline's own page and use its stated call, counter, or online route. If a public page leaves a rate or eligibility rule unstated, mark that field Unknown rather than filling it with a third-party percentage.

Common military-flight questions

Does every airline offer a fixed military flight discount?

No single percentage was established in the official pages reviewed. American says government or military fares are available in some markets; Southwest confirms military fares through its own phone or counter route. Compare the exact itinerary and read each carrier’s terms. American · Southwest

Can I book Southwest’s military fare online?

Southwest’s current FAQ says military fares are not available on Southwest.com. Eligible U.S. active-duty personnel and authorized dependents can call 1-800-I-FLY-SWA (1-800-435-9792) or visit a ticket counter. A valid Uniformed Services ID must be presented at check-in; Rapid Rewards points cannot buy these fares.

Does a baggage waiver lower the ticket fare?

A baggage waiver applies to baggage fees under its own eligibility and limits. It does not change the ticket’s base fare. Keep the fare quote and any bag-fee savings in separate fields when comparing a trip.

Can a military family member use a military fare?

Eligibility is carrier-specific. Southwest lists authorized dependents and gives an accompaniment rule for dependent travelers ages 2 through 11. Other airlines’ readable pages may leave family eligibility unstated; mark those fields Unknown rather than assuming the Southwest rule applies.

Southwest FAQ wording and answers were re-read on September 27, 2026; see the source audit.

  • United's accessible fare-search form did not expose its complete military eligibility or fare terms; those fields remain Unknown.
  • Alaska's two official pages returned HTTP 406, so their current airfare and baggage details remain Unknown.
  • The MilitaryOneSource result URL did not resolve during the Google-result audit. Its body was not read, and no search snippet was used as policy evidence.
