The Zoo separates free active-duty admission, dependent tickets and MWR packages
The Zoo's own Help Center FAQ separates three channels. Active-duty U.S. Armed Forces personnel receive free admission and parking year-round at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. The FAQ says that free admission does not cover special ticketed events or programs. Military spouses and eligible immediate dependents receive 10% off a 1-Day Pass Any Day at either park, without needing the service member to accompany them; a valid dependent ID must be shown at a ticket window. For retirees and veterans, the FAQ says there is no discount at the parks and directs customers to local MWR ticket offices.
| Published channel | Benefit stated | Price base | Eligibility and limits | How to claim | Dates and exclusions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Active-duty U.S. Armed Forces | Free admission and parking year-round at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park; the FAQ says to visit as often as desired. | Not a percentage offer. No ticket-price denominator or dollar saving is stated. | The FAQ's detailed entry requires active-duty identification. Its footnote lists service members, Reserve components, National Guard, reservists in training, service-academy cadets and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy cadets; it excludes civilians and foreign military personnel. | Present a valid Common Access Card or Uniformed Services ID at the gate/entry turnstile. | The FAQ says year-round, but gives no policy start or end date. Special ticketed events and programs are excluded from the free admission. |
| Military spouses and eligible immediate dependents | 10% off the 1-Day Pass Any Day at both parks; the Zoo says the dependent need not be accompanied by the active-duty member. | The stated base is the 1-Day Pass Any Day. The separate ticket page lists $78 for adults ages 12+ and $68 for children ages 3-11 as checked September 24, 2026. The FAQ does not state a final discounted total or tax treatment; no total is calculated here. | Military spouses and eligible immediate dependents; the FAQ says to show a valid dependent ID. It does not state a ticket-count cap in this entry. | Present the valid dependent ID at any ticket window. | No start, end or expiration date is stated for the 10% offer. September 24, 2026 is the page-check date, not a policy date. |
| Retirees and veterans | The FAQ says the Zoo and Safari Park do not offer retirees or veterans a discount at the parks; it says discounted packages are available through MWR departments on local military installations. | No Zoo-issued percentage, ticket base or MWR package price is stated. | The FAQ names U.S. military retirees, veterans and others as possible MWR package customers; exact eligibility and restrictions depend on the MWR ticket office. | Contact the local military MWR Ticket Office for purchase requirements. | No offer-validity dates are stated; MWR-specific terms are not shown on the Zoo FAQ. |
The official ticket page currently lists the 1-Day Pass Any Day at $78 for adults (ages 12+) and $68 for children (ages 3-11). Those are general ticket prices observed September 24, 2026, not the resulting dependent prices. The Zoo FAQ does not say whether the 10% calculation is before or after tax, so this guide does not calculate a final amount.
The official ticket page says Value Days tickets cannot be combined with another discount, offer or promotion; it does not name the military-dependent offer specifically. The guide leaves that interaction unconfirmed.
MWR is a separate ticket channel, not an added Zoo percentage
The Zoo FAQ directs retirees and veterans to local MWR offices for discounted packages but does not publish their rates. A readable USCG TRACEN Petaluma MWR store page describes tax-free military discount tickets and general store conditions: the purchaser must be an eligible person aged 18 or older, buy in their own name with a Visa or Mastercard, and ticket sales have no refunds or exchanges. The page body did not display a San Diego Zoo ticket price, discount percentage or offer-validity date. Those generic MWR terms are not presented as Zoo policy.
| MWR page | Visible offer detail | Price and limits | Route | Date/status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USCG TRACEN Petaluma MWR store | The readable body says the store sells tax-free military discount tickets to eligible patrons; it does not show a Zoo product price or rate. | Generic store terms: an eligible 18+ purchaser buys in their own name with Visa or Mastercard; no refunds or exchanges. Product-specific Zoo eligibility and price remain unknown on this page. | The MWR online store; the page says to email MWR for products not displayed. | No Zoo-offer dates appear in the body. The page footer's 2022 copyright is not an offer date. |
An older travel release is kept separate from today's official FAQ
A readable SanDiego.org travel press release describes a complimentary one-day Zoo pass and an Africa Tram Safari at Safari Park for active-duty military, military-academy cadets and Reserve members with active orders, with valid active military ID. The same article contains surrounding offers with 2012 date windows; its Zoo paragraph gives no Zoo-specific start/end date. It is historical reporting, not a current Zoo policy or a current-validity date. The current terms in this guide come from the Zoo FAQ.
The page keeps Zoo, Safari Park and MWR terms in their own lanes
The Zoo FAQ covers both the Zoo and Safari Park for the listed free-admission and dependent-ticket offers. The historical press release's Safari Park Africa Tram detail stays attached to that old report. The MWR store remains a third-party military-ticket route. No price or percentage from another theme park or aquarium is used here.
